Experience Elephant Safari with Kalukanda House

Enjoy a day trip to Udawalawe National Park with the highest population of elephants and watch baby elephants being fed by rangers. The park was officially created in 1972 to provide a protected sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. Sitting between the island’s dry and wet climatic zones, the varied landscape supports a wide range of wildlife.

With over 200 bird species the park is also excellent for bird watching and is considered a year round destination. If visiting in our green season, you will spot wildlife around water sources. Widely considered less busy than neighbouring Yala National Park the Udawalawe experience is calmer and gentler.

Guided by a Naturalist, and with binoculars and a respect for the animals, your private jeep experience spans a few hours. Arriving at dawn or sunset, you will also see Buffalo, Crocodiles and an abundance of birds. Udawalawe National Park is an easy ride away and breakfast or lunch in the park can be arranged.

Sri Lanka is one of the worlds’s most densely populated biodiversity hotspots and our wildlife and ancient forests are never far away. Read why in our article on Sri Lankan wildlife in our blog pages here
