The Sri Lankan elephant: gentle, intelligent, irre The Sri Lankan elephant: gentle, intelligent, irreplaceable. Sri Lankan elephants are icons of our island, they remember faces for decades, mourn their dead, and walk the same ancient paths their ancestors did for thousands of years. But today, those paths are shrinking.

As forests vanish, elephants are pushed into villages and farms and the human–elephant conflict is a tragedy that scars both species. The good news is that there are some brilliant projects and people advocating for solutions and peaceful co-existence.

We can all help protect them. When we go on safari, we have a choice: to respect their space, or to add to their stress. The best guides drive slowly, cut the engine, and let elephants be elephants — no honking, no chasing, no surrounding them with jeeps. We gladly recommend places offering these passionate experts. As an island, we love to keep our guests happy, and in return we ask our visitors respect a few boundaries in the name of conservation and preservation.

When you come to Sri Lanka, choose those guides who are looking out for our wildlife and your interest in our nature, and listen to their advice. Watch quietly. Let your heart do the zooming. You won’t regret being part of the mindful travel revolution 🙏🏽 booking links in bio

The playtime edit - a day in the life of a teenage The playtime edit - a day in the life of a teenager on holiday - on repeat. Sri Lanka offers something for everyone. Cultural immersion, foodie adventure, creative expansion, a retreat from daily worries and of course…playtime. Wishing the best of luck for results days to all the teens and students out there. This is what you could be doing while Ma and Pa are busy being “old” doing grown up things like visiting the galleries and markets, learning about indigenous craft, shopping for artisan products and sipping Arrack Sours 😉

Simple pleasures, do you agree this is one of life Simple pleasures, do you agree this is one of life’s luxuries? A popular day trip is a visit to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site just 35 minutes away by train, tuk tuk or car. If you can bear to pull yourself away from our lush gardens and coastal location this is a great way to spend some time exploring the area.

Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese, re-built by the Dutch, taken over by the British and now sits firmly back in the hands of Sri Lanka. All that history creates a stunning architectural backdrop to a walled city teeming with a fusion of influences on modern day creativity, commerce, education and life. Galle Cricket ground is one of the world’s best loved spots, and our guests join fans from around the world to watch Sri Lanka cricket play other nations. The Galle Literary Festival @gallelitfest is back as an annual fixture, with international and local authors on stages throughout the town and local historians offer fascinating insights on guided walks around hidden corners of the Fort. The Art Trail curated by @artramagazine brings colour to the city and boutique restaurants and hotels offer beautiful spots to stop off for a drink and a meal.

Our local connection from Kumbalgama station will take you to Galle via coastal towns, passing over crossings and snaking through paddy fields. Workers, families, school children and travellers sit side by side. Stand on our station platform and spot tuk tuks, bikes and walkers as they commute about their daily lives. Tickets cost a few rupees, the trains will immerse you. In the past buskers have performed in carriages and short-eat sellers have passed by, other times the train is quiet and all you can hear is the rhythmic thrum of the tracks beneath, travellers silently watching the world go by and lost in their own thoughts. Real, every day life.

Join us at Kalukanda House and let us show you how pottering around, following your nose in these every day ways can be a beautifully simple pleasure. Isn’t that a real luxury in 2025. Booking details in bio.
